Basic Rugby Terminology

  • Try: score
  • Conversion: extra 2 points after scoring try (via kick)
  • Knock On: ball fumbled/dropped & moves forward
  • Scrum: after knock on opposing teams is awarded the ball
  • Lineout: ball goes over the touch line
  • Ruck: formation used to maintain possession of the ball
  • Pitch: field
  • Touch: out of bounds line
  • Breakdown: tackle is happening

Rugby: How does scoring work?

  • Try: 5 points
  • Conversion: 2 points
  • Drop Goal: 3 points
  • Penalty Kick: 3 points
  • Penalty Try: 7 points
